The whole country is fully aware that a tax represents a kind of help to the State to cover public expenses and keep the entire country in perfect condition. They are demanded both by physical and legal individuals.
It is obligatory to pay taxes; otherwise, you will have grave problems. Don’t you know what the deadline is? It won’t be difficult to find out; the official IRS website makes an annual publication known as Publication 509.
There you will have all the required information. Moreover, you can watch the news and online pages like this one.
When to file my 2022 taxes?
The annual date established for the tax return is April 15, except for those years when the date falls on a weekend or holiday. In 2022, the extended date was Monday, April 18, because Friday was Easter bank holiday.
It is noteworthy that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS decided to extend the date to May 17. That way, individuals would have a little more time on their returns and payments.
When is the last day to file taxes?
Federal tax filing in 2022 is due Monday, April 18. Although in Maine and Massachusetts, you will have a chance until Tuesday the 19th because the day before is Patriots’ Day in each state.
Winter storm victims in Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee have extended deadlines to file their federal taxes. Victims of wildfires in Colorado also have time. The deadline is May 16.
There are other states with extended dates, such as Delaware (May 2), Hawaii (April 20), Lowa (May 2), and Louisiana (May 16). Maryland (July 15), Nebraska (April 15), Oklahoma (April 20), and Virginia (May 1).
Additional time is available for those serving in the military or supporting the U.S. Armed Forces.
Estimated Tax Due Dates
Small business owners, contractors, and self-employed individuals must file estimated taxes every three months. They are calculated based on the income earned during the period above.
In this case, the agency requires a 90% payment during the year with these types of estimated costs to avoid tax penalties. The payment dates are:
- April 15 for payments from January 1 to March 31.
- June 15 for payments from April 1 to May 31.
- September 15 for prices from June 1 to August 31.
- January 15 of the following year for payments from September 1 to December 31.
It is advisable to be up-to-date with estimated payments to avoid penalties. You can use the IRS Direct Pay website to pay with your card if you are on the deadline.
You missed the deadline!
Undoubtedly, it’s a big stress to miss the tax deadline because everything after that will be tedious. However, don’t worry. You can file a request of extension until October 15, 2022.
The extension works when you don’t owe money; it doesn’t mean you won’t pay. It just means a little more time to complete the return. You will have a penalty or interest when you do not pay the tax on time.
Late payments are charged at 0.5% per month, with a maximum of 25% of the amount owed. When you do not request the extension, the penalty increases to 5% month to month, but with a maximum of 25%.
We recommend you not to exceed the dates established by the IRS for filing the tax because it could cause you inconveniences due to fines or criminal issues.
You must understand it. Evading taxes is a national crime that must be punished. Don’t go through that and keep up with your returns.
A good tip may be to hire an expert to help you organize the documentation. Especially, owners of large businesses require extra help to avoid missing deadlines. Although experts charge a high amount of money, they are guaranteed to be a good option in these cases.
