Although it is possible to file online, many taxpayers prefer the traditional sending the documents to the postal service. You should be aware that the verification process, when filed this way, can take at least two weeks.
The processing of taxes sent in physical form is slower because the whole process is manual; it is done on business days with the schedule imposed in each office.
Where can you send your income tax return?
There are more IRS addresses than you can imagine, and the processing centers are located in different areas of the country. The mailing address where you should send your return depends on the city where you are located and the documents you will be filing.
To get the right mailing address, you need to go to the IRS website, go to the home tab, file individuals and select “Where to file paper returns with or without payment.”
Addresses by the state will appear for Forms 1040, 1040 – SR, 1040ES, 1040V, amended returns, and extensions. There are also addresses for taxpayers outside the U.S. or other filing characteristics.
In each state, there are different addresses, each one adjusted to the type of form submitted. On the page are links for each state with the lessons. Remember that the mailing address changes if you mail payments with the return.
The mailed return with payments is sent to the IRS, but the returns without charges go to the Treasury Department. Furthermore, IRS addresses change periodically, so you should check your addresses each year.
The IRS uses zip codes to sort incoming mail, so add the last four numbers of your return and the zip code to ensure that the documents arrive at their destination on time.
How do I mail my return if I live outside the United States?
The tax return or payment through the U.S. Postal Service can be used when you live in the United States. Otherwise, you need a private delivery service, especially when you need proof that your payment was received on time.
Private delivery services you can use that are approved by the institution are FedEx, UPS, or DHL Express. Consider placing each statement in a separate envelope and then placing them all in one large envelope for a better documentation order.
Deadlines for mailing 2022 tax returns
The deadline for 2021 individual tax returns is April 18, 2022, the date indicated for all states except Massachusetts and Maine. April 18, 2022, is also the deadline for the 2022 first quarter estimated tax payments.
If you requested an extension on your tax return in 2021, you could make the payment until October 17, 2022.
Make sure you file your return on time
One of the key items on your tax return is the postmark on the envelope, although some post offices have extended hours and late postmarks before tax day begins.
The recommendation is to buy a certificate of mailing at any post office that will serve to prove that you mailed it on the proper date. You should keep the certificate because post offices do not file a copy.
Before proceeding with the shipment, check that you have the correct return address on the label; also, check that you have enough postage.
Finally, it is advisable to use the electronic way; the procedure is faster and safer. The processing is done within 24 hours. You do not have to worry about whether all the documents arrived in order and on time.
In addition, the process is easy with the platform because it has indications to complete each step correctly and with as few errors as possible.
