Wisconsin Business Tax Registration • Steps and tips

One of the most common (and useful) actions is to use tax registration to comply with Wisconsin tax obligations.

That process requires some prior considerations since, in some cases, you will need more documentation and paperwork than in others.

Is it possible to file taxes online in Wisconsin?

Yes. But it is a process you must follow methodically as you can make some serious mistakes. We will try to explain some of the most relevant issues about this way of filing taxes.

First of all, to finish the process, you must enter the online commercial tax registration, where you will be able to make the corresponding permit or certificate request. This registration is received seven to 10 business days after your request if it is by mail. If by e-mail, an account number is usually generated within one to two business days.

Payment of the application (application fee) is made at the time of registration. We can do that either by direct debit or debit/credit card. If you choose the billing option, you will receive a notice with the registration package within seven to 10 business days, as discussed above.

Registering and paying taxes at the same time

For many people who have not interacted with the department through the Internet before, it may be useful to know whether or not it is possible to register and pay taxes simultaneously. The answer is yes, but with some nuances.

In the registration process, you may be asked for more information, and you may be asked to complete a specific registration: My Tax Account. To access all the options, you must necessarily go through this last link, where you will be able to file and pay your business taxes.

Possible problems when filing the tax registration

The tax registration process is not without potential problems. The most common is the inability to complete the application. That is common and can occur for a variety of reasons. For example, imagine you are filling out the application but missing some documentation that the application requests or you wish to add. Instead of closing and restarting, it is possible to use a save button.

The save button is located at the bottom left of the page. However, it is important to note that you must provide an email address to use this save system. You will then receive instructions on completing the application as it will have saved the data you have entered.

In any case, you can always try to contact the admissions department via telephone at (608) 266-2776 and ask for assistance with your form.

Another relatively common situation is to have previously had a certificate or permit and try to reactivate the corresponding account. The important thing to note here is that using the online business tax system is impossible. It is possible to use My Tax Account to request an account reactivation. We can do that through a message on the platform or by sending a written request by mail or post.

Finally, it may also happen that you do not have a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). This information is relevant since the online registration system for business taxes in Wisconsin necessarily requires you to present the FEIN in almost all cases and applications.

In any case, you can contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040 to apply for it or find out the details of the process for doing so.

If you still have questions about how to proceed on the platform, or even if you are in person or person, there are different ways to contact you to try to get it.

We can obtain face-to-face information through the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Office of Tax Operations PO Box 8902 Madison, WI 53708-8902.
